At this temperature, the gas condenses into a liquid, reducing its volume by about 600 times. This process of liquefaction makes it much more efficient and economical to store and transport large quantities of natural gas across long distances, especially in places where pipelines do not exist or are not feasible.

Natural gas in its liquefied form can be transported by sea in large LNG tankers or by land in specialized containers. Once it reaches its destination, LNG can be stored in LNG storage tanks until it is ready to be distributed and regasified for use in homes, industries, or as a fuel source for vehicles.

LNG is particularly advantageous for transporting natural gas to remote or distant locations where pipelines cannot reach, such as islands, landlocked countries, or geographically isolated industrial plants. What Is an LNG Storage Tank?

An LNG storage tank is a specially engineered container designed to store liquefied natural gas at cryogenic temperatures (below -162°C). These tanks are vital in the LNG supply chain because they allow LNG to be stored safely and efficiently until it is needed for transportation, regasification, or distribution. Without these tanks, it would be impossible to store LNG for extended periods without significant losses from vaporization (boil-off).

LNG storage tanks are typically found in several key locations, such as:

  • Liquefaction plants: These facilities cool natural gas to its liquid form and store it until it can be loaded onto LNG carriers.

  • Regasification terminals: At these facilities, LNG is stored before being converted back into its gaseous state for distribution through pipelines.

  • Ports and storage facilities: LNG storage tanks are used at ports and other distribution hubs where LNG is stored before being transported by ship, truck, or rail to its final destination.

 

How Do LNG Storage Tanks Work?

LNG storage tanks are designed to keep LNG at extremely low temperatures to maintain its liquid form. This requires sophisticated insulation and pressure management systems to ensure that the LNG remains stable and safe while minimizing the loss of gas due to evaporation (boil-off).

Here’s a breakdown of how LNG storage tanks work:

  • Double-Walled Design: Most LNG storage tanks are designed with a double-walled structure to enhance safety and insulation. The inner tank, typically made of specialized cryogenic materials such as stainless steel or aluminum, holds the liquefied natural gas. The outer wall is made of materials like carbon steel or concrete and provides additional structural integrity and protection. Between the two walls is a layer of highly efficient insulation that helps maintain the cryogenic temperature and minimizes heat transfer from the environment to the LNG.

  • Cryogenic Insulation: The insulation material used in LNG tanks is crucial for keeping the LNG at its low temperature. Common insulation materials include perlite or foam glass, which are designed to drastically reduce heat conduction. This insulation prevents the LNG from absorbing heat, which could cause it to warm up and expand back into its gaseous state.

  • Pressure Control Systems: As LNG is stored, some of it naturally evaporates (a process known as boil-off), which can increase the pressure inside the tank. LNG storage tanks are equipped with pressure control systems that safely manage the internal pressure. These systems allow small amounts of boil-off gas to be vented or recaptured to ensure the pressure remains within safe limits. Some modern facilities can capture this evaporated gas and re-liquefy it for further use, reducing waste and emissions.

  • Safety Features: LNG storage tanks incorporate various safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure stable operation. These features include temperature and pressure monitors, gas detectors, and automatic pressure relief valves. In the event of a malfunction or pressure spike, the safety systems are designed to automatically vent gas or shut down operations to prevent dangerous situations such as gas leaks or explosions. LNG tanks are also engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, seismic activity, and potential external damage.

 

Applications of LNG Storage Tanks

LNG storage tanks are used in a variety of industries and applications, playing a key role in ensuring the availability and security of energy supplies. Here are some of the most common applications:

  • Power Generation: In many regions, LNG is used as a fuel source for power plants. This is especially true in areas where natural gas pipelines do not exist or where it is impractical to build them. LNG storage tanks at power plants allow for the on-site storage of large quantities of natural gas, ensuring that the plant has a reliable fuel supply. This is particularly important for power plants in remote areas or those serving island communities.

  • Industrial Processes: Numerous industries rely on natural gas for heating, chemical processes, or as a raw material. Industries such as steel production, glass manufacturing, and food processing require significant amounts of natural gas. LNG storage tanks provide these industries with a convenient and reliable way to store large quantities of LNG that can be used as needed to support industrial operations.

  • Transportation: LNG is increasingly being used as a transportation fuel, especially for ships, trucks, and trains. This shift is driven by the desire to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. LNG storage tanks on these vehicles allow them to carry enough fuel for long journeys, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution compared to traditional diesel or gasoline-powered vehicles.

  • Export and Import Terminals: LNG storage tanks are a critical part of the infrastructure at export and import terminals. At these facilities, LNG is stored before being loaded onto ships for export or offloaded from ships for domestic distribution. These terminals often feature large-scale LNG storage tanks capable of holding vast quantities of LNG, ensuring a continuous supply for domestic markets or international trade.
